Buying guide Quiet and inverter generators
Quietest generators, ranked by the maker's decibel figure
The quietest generator we checked is the Honda EU2200i: Honda lists 48 dB(A) at a quarter load and 57 dB(A) at its rated load. Below are six inverter generators in three sizes, ranked only where the maker says what load the figure was measured at.
The quietest generators by size
Honda's EU2200i is the quietest small inverter we list and Honda's EU7000iS the quietest large one, going by each maker's quarter-load figure. Makers do not all measure the same way: the figure we recorded for Champion gives a distance (23 feet) but no load, and the one for Westinghouse gives neither, so those two are listed without a rank.
| Rank in size | Model | Running / peak W | Maker's noise figure | Load stated? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small 1 | Honda EU2200i | 1,800 / 2,200 | 48 dB(A) at 1/4 load, 57 at rated load | Yes |
| Small 2 | WEN 56235i | 1,900 / 2,350 | 51 dB at quarter load | Yes |
| Mid, not ranked | Westinghouse iGen5000DFc | 3,900 / 5,000 | 52 dBA | No |
| Mid, not ranked | Champion 4000-Watt RV Ready Inverter | 3,000 / 4,000 | 64 dBA at 23 ft | No |
| Large 1 | Honda EU7000iS | 5,500 / 7,000 | 52 dB(A) at 1/4 load, 58 at rated load | Yes |
| Large 2 | WEN DF680iX | 5,100 / 6,800 | 64 dB at quarter load | Yes |
Every figure is the maker's own. Only Champion's comes with a distance; Honda's EU2200i page does not state one, so treat the order as a guide rather than a lab result. Honda's two figures show the noise rising with the load.

04 Inverter or open frame
Inverter vs open frame noise
On the makers' own figures the inverters we list sit at 48 to 64 dB and the open frame portables at 68 to 74 dBA. The makers measure at different loads and rarely give a distance, so treat that gap as a rough guide.
| Open frame model | Running W | Maker's noise figure |
|---|---|---|
| Westinghouse WGen3600DFc | 3,600 | 68 dBA |
| Westinghouse WGen5300DFcv | 5,300 | 68 dBA |
| DuroMax XP5500HX | 4,500 | 69 dB |
| Westinghouse WGen7500DFc | 7,500 | 72 dBA |
| Westinghouse WGen9500DFc | 9,500 | 74 dBA |
| DuroMax XP13000EH | 10,500 | 74 dB |
| Westinghouse WGen14500DFc | 14,500 | as low as 74 dBA |
| WEN DF475T | 3,800 | Not stated |
What the decibel numbers mean
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH) says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss, even after long exposure, while long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can. It puts normal conversation at 60 to 70 dBA.
- Champion describes 59 dBA from 23 feet as about the same noise level as normal conversation.
- Makers commonly publish noise at 23 feet (7 meters): Generac and Champion both do. We found no source that calls 23 feet a formal standard.
Inverters also make cleaner power
Champion says its conventional portables put out about 12 to 20 percent total harmonic distortion (THD) depending on load, and its inverters under 3 percent. It recommends under 3 percent for a UPS battery backup, a pellet stove or a high efficiency furnace control board. WEN puts household grid power at about 2 to 3 percent, traditional generators at 5 to 20 percent, and its own inverters and power stations usually under 1.5 percent. If you are unsure what a device needs, ask its maker. Open frame units are not all the same: Westinghouse lists its WGen12000DF at 5 percent or less.
If you need more running watts than the inverters here give, the portable generator buying guide covers the open frame classes.
05 Camping
What size quiet generator for camping?
Our camping list needs 1,600 running and 1,600 starting watts, so either small inverter covers it, and the Honda EU2200i is the quieter of the two.
| Item | How many | Running W |
|---|---|---|
| LED bulb | 2 | 40 |
| Phone charger | 2 | 120 |
| Laptop | 1 | 230 |
| Box fan | 1 | 130 |
| Coffee maker | 1 | 800 |
| Running total | 7 | 1,320 |
None of these has a motor start surge in our chart, so the starting total is also 1,320 W. With 20 percent headroom that is 1,600 running and 1,600 starting watts. The coffee maker is most of it: without it the list needs only 700 W. Honda rates the EU2200i at 3.2 hours on its 0.95 gallon tank at rated load and 8.1 hours at a quarter load (450 W), so a lighter load runs longer and quieter.
Change the camping list in the calculator
Before you go, check the campground's generator rules: the hours generators may run and any noise limit. National Park Service regulations prohibit running motorized equipment such as an electric generating plant above 60 decibels (A-weighted) measured at 50 feet (36 CFR 2.12), and each park and private campground sets its own generator hours, so check the rules where you are staying before you rely on a generator
Never run it in a tent, camper or other enclosed space. CPSC says never to run a portable generator inside a home, garage, shed or other enclosed space, and to point the exhaust away from buildings. Champion says never to run one in a truck bed, SUV or trailer. A CO shutoff does not make indoor use safe. Generator safety.
06 RV
Quiet generators for a 30 amp RV
The WEN DF680iX is the quiet inverter here that covers our 30 amp RV list: 4,200 running and 5,900 starting watts, with a TT-30R outlet.
That list is a 13,500 BTU air conditioner, an RV refrigerator, a microwave, four LED bulbs, a TV and two chargers: 3,470 W running, plus the air conditioner's 1,400 W start, plus headroom. The smaller RV-ready inverters fit lighter lists. The air conditioner on its own needs 2,100 running and 3,800 starting watts, which both the Champion 4000-Watt (3,000 / 4,000 W) and the Westinghouse iGen5000DFc (3,900 / 5,000 W) cover.
Two small inverters can also share a load: Honda says two EU2200i units joined with its optional parallel cable give up to 4,400 watts. Kits are brand-specific.
The quietest inverter for home backup
For outage essentials through a transfer switch, the Honda EU7000iS is the quietest model we list with a 30 A 120/240 V locking outlet: 52 dB(A) at a quarter load. Our outage essentials list needs 3,300 running and 4,200 starting watts, which it covers with room to spare; the WEN DF680iX (L14-30R) covers it too.
The Westinghouse iGen5000DFc covers the same numbers but is 120 V only, so it suits plug-in loads with cords, not a 240 V transfer switch. Connecting any generator to house wiring takes a transfer switch or an approved interlock installed by a licensed electrician; see how transfer switches work and whole house sizing.
Quieter still is a battery power station, which burns no fuel. Consumer Reports found the ones it tested made virtually no noise, and BLUETTI and Jackery list 30 dB for their Elite 30 V2 and Explorer 1000 v2. They run smaller loads for fewer hours; see power stations for home backup.
How we rank quiet generators
We rank by the maker's own noise figure, within a size class, using the quarter-load figure and only where the maker states the load. We do not test generators or measure noise ourselves; each figure comes from the maker's product page or spec sheet, checked on October 17, 2026. A model whose maker gives no load is listed without a rank. Specs come only from the maker, and each Amazon listing was matched by title, brand and model. We leave out prices, star ratings and badges.
Quiet generator questions
What is the quietest generator?
Of the gas generators we checked, the Honda EU2200i lists the lowest figure: 48 dB(A) at a quarter load and 57 dB(A) at its rated load. For more power, the Honda EU7000iS lists 52 dB(A) at a quarter load. A battery power station is quieter than either because it has no engine.
Are inverter generators quieter than regular generators?
On the makers' figures, yes: the inverters we list publish 48 to 64 dB and the open frame portables 68 to 74 dBA. The makers measure at different loads and distances, so the gap is a guide, not a lab result.
What size generator do I need for camping?
Our camping list (two LED bulbs, two phone chargers, a laptop, a box fan and a coffee maker) needs 1,600 running and 1,600 starting watts with headroom. A small inverter such as the Honda EU2200i (1,800 running, 2,200 peak watts) covers it. Leave the coffee maker home and the list needs only 700 W.
How loud is 60 dB?
About as loud as normal talking: NIH puts normal conversation at 60 to 70 dBA, and Champion compares its 59 dBA at 23 feet to normal conversation. NIH also says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss, even after long exposure.
Why are decibel ratings given at 23 feet?
Many makers publish noise at 23 feet (7 meters); Generac and Champion both do. We found no source that calls it a formal standard, and some makers give a load instead of a distance, so check what each figure means before you compare two machines.
What is the best inverter generator for home backup?
One whose running and peak watts cover your list and that has a 30 A locking outlet if it will feed a transfer switch. Our outage essentials list needs 3,300 running and 4,200 starting watts. The Honda EU7000iS (5,500 / 7,000 W, 30 A 120/240 V locking outlet) and the WEN DF680iX (5,100 / 6,800 W, L14-30R) both cover it.
Can I run two small inverters together?
Often, with a parallel kit made for that brand. Honda says two EU2200i units joined with its optional cable give up to 4,400 watts, and Champion's parallel kit links two of its inverters of 2,800 W or more. Kits do not work across brands.
Can I run a quiet generator inside my tent or camper?
No. CPSC says never to run a portable generator in a home, garage, shed or other enclosed space, and opening doors or windows does not give enough ventilation. Run it outside with the exhaust pointed away from tents, campers and buildings. A quiet engine still makes carbon monoxide.
